Today I am launching Beyond the Score- Wine without Numbers. It’s an online newsletter that explores wine beyond ratings, rankings, and reputation. After years spent in vineyards, cellars, and restaurants, I have found myself returning to the same question:
“How do we help people understand wine without making them subconsciously feel they need permission to enjoy it?”
I find wine to be an extraordinary mix of place, nature, craft, and human experience. It is literally a “reap what you sow” message in each bottle. In a way, it is history preserved in liquid form. Yet somehow much of the conversation around wine has become centered on numbers and outside opinions.
Of course, when analyzing a sample of wine in a laboratory, facts are facts… sugar levels, pH, etc. Numbers are important. Scores can be useful. Expertise matters. However, wine is also deeply personal.
In fact, the most important palate is your own.
Beyond the Score is a place to explore the vineyard, the cellar, the science, and the stories behind the bottle. It is not telling people what to like. It is about supporting them in becoming curious, confident, and engaged with what they taste.
The publication is written by me under the name Your Vintner. I have chosen to keep my identity private so the focus remains on the ideas, the observations, and most importantly, the conversation.
It would be an honor if you would be among the first readers.
Also, please feel free to share this with anyone you know who may either be simply intrigued or fully obsessed with wine. The more the merrier!
Thank you for joining me at the beginning of this project.
I hope it sparks a perpetual curiosity, conversation, and perhaps a different way of looking at wine.
